The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has issued a stern warning to public universities operating unaccredited study centers, declaring that any tertiary institution continuing to run programs at these centers will have its accreditation revoked.
This decisive action comes as a response to the alarming rise of unaccredited centers linked to major universities across the country.
In an exclusive interview with the Daily Graphic, Professor Abdulai Jinapor, the Director-General of GTEC, emphasized that accredited programs are institution-specific and cannot be taught at unauthorized locations.
Currently, GTEC has directed the University of Cape Coast (UCC), University for Development Studies (UDS), and University of Education, Winneba (UEW) to halt enrollment at 160 identified satellite centers.
The UCC operates the highest number of these centers, totaling 91, followed by UEW with 48 and UDS with 21.
Many of these unaccredited centers are housed in senior high schools, colleges of education, church premises, social centers, and even within company facilities, such as the Nsawam Prisons used by UCC.
