The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has announced plans to begin the spillage of excess water from the Weija Dam as a precautionary measure to protect lives and property.
In a letter dated April 7, 2025, the company cited the onset of the rainy season as the primary cause of the steadily rising water level in the dam. GWCL stressed that failing to spill excess water could potentially lead to the collapse of the dam, posing a significant threat to surrounding communities.
Though GWCL did not specify the exact date the spillage will begin, the company assured that the process would commence at a controlled, low rate to minimize the impact on downstream residents.
“The actual rate would be dictated by the incoming flow of water into the dam,” the statement read, noting that the spillage would continue as long as water levels rise. This measured approach is intended to reduce the risk of flooding while managing the increasing water volume effectively.
The management of GWCL expressed regret for any inconveniences the spillage may cause to affected communities.
Nonetheless, the company emphasized that the exercise is necessary for public safety and the long-term integrity of the dam. Residents living in low-lying areas downstream have been advised to stay alert and take precautionary measures.
