A 45-year-old Acting Gyaasehene of the Nkusukum Traditional Area in the Mfantseman Municipality, Eric Ato Appiah Mends, is currently remanded in police custody following a tragic shooting that claimed the life of 52-year-old Kwesi Melchoir.

The incident occurred during the Odambia Festival on October 25, where an altercation escalated into violence, leading to the fatal confrontation between the two men.

The Cape Coast District Court One, presided over by Her Worship Anita Sheila Crabb, has formally charged Mends with murder as the community grapples with the aftermath of this shocking event.

As the court proceedings unfold, family head Abusuapanyin Solomon Ato Budu-Hagan has voiced his profound shock and sorrow over the tragic incident.

He recounted the tense atmosphere surrounding the festival, which has been marred by ongoing chieftaincy disputes.

According to Budu-Hagan, the conflict began over disagreements regarding a ceremonial cow slaughter, with one faction in favor and another opposed.

Despite repeated warnings from community leaders to quell the brewing tension, the situation ultimately spiraled out of control.

The Nkusukum Traditional Council, now embroiled in litigation over these chieftaincy issues, is calling for swift justice to be served in light of the devastating events.

Budu-Hagan has emphasized the community’s desire for a fair resolution, urging the court to expedite the judicial process.

With Mends set to reappear in court on November 11, 2024, the community remains hopeful for closure as they mourn the loss of Melchoir and seek to heal from this tragic incident.
