Dr. Samuel Afriyie, a political scientist at Kumasi Technical University, has expressed his reservations about the approach taken by former President John Agyekum Kufuor in airing his dissatisfaction with the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Speaking on ABC Morning, Dr. Afriyie said the former President should have used internal party platforms such as the Council of Elders or party meetings, which provide room for “constructive engagement and resolution.”
His comments follow recent remarks by Mr. Kufuor indicating he felt sidelined by the current leadership of the party.
“I think that he could have made this statement rather through the Council of Elders or other medium,” Dr. Afriyie stated, noting that while Mr. Kufuor’s grievances may be valid, the choice of public forums can weaken internal cohesion and fuel external criticism.
He stressed the importance of confidentiality and unity in party affairs, particularly ahead of the 2026 general elections where the NPP is working to regain momentum after internal challenges.
Despite his disagreement with the method of communication, Dr. Afriyie called on the NPP leadership to reconcile with the former President.
He described Kufuor as a “respected figure and thought leader” whose experience remains critical to the party’s growth and strategic direction.
He urged party executives to engage in open dialogue and reaffirm their commitment to inclusive leadership to heal divisions and strengthen the party’s foundation.
