Under-pressure Black Stars coach Otto Addo has declared that he will not resign, despite Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
This marks the first time since 2004 that the Black Stars have missed out on the tournament. Speaking after Ghana’s 2-1 defeat to Niger in their final Group F match, Addo defended his commitment to the team and brushed aside calls for his resignation.
“If you know where I have come from as a person to arrive at this job, you won’t even ask about resignation. People shouting and telling me to resign can’t affect me,” he stated.
Addo acknowledged the team’s defensive struggles, particularly in handling set pieces, which proved costly against Niger. Reflecting on the loss, he said, “We started okay but conceded a goal from a set piece.
We were aware because the last time we met, they scored from a corner. Surely, we have to defend these set pieces better.”
Despite the disappointment, Addo highlighted the promising performances of debutants, emphasizing that their efforts justified their selection. He also urged the media and fans to focus on supporting the players rather than assigning blame, stating, “The media has the power to lift somebody up. I really need you to leave the players alone because they gave us everything.”
In an unexpected moment during the press conference, Addo called for peaceful elections in Ghana, urging unity amidst the country’s political processes.
“I would like to pray for peaceful elections. We have a peaceful country, so no matter the outcome, we pray for peace,” he said.
While admitting that a draw against Niger would not have changed Ghana’s elimination, Addo acknowledged its potential to boost morale.
With Ghana finishing bottom of their group without a single win, fans and stakeholders are left questioning the future direction of the Black Stars under Addo’s leadership.
