Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has indicated that he has little confidence in the Inspector-General of Police’s assurances regarding security for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) upcoming presidential primary, citing what he describes as failures of law enforcement during the Ablekuma North by-election disturbances.
Speaking on ABC In the Morning on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, Hon. Oppong Nkrumah said the inability of the Ghana Police Service to arrest and prosecute perpetrators involved in the Ablekuma North chaos raises serious concerns about the credibility of current security guarantees.
“We will take it with a pinch of salt,” he said in reference to the IGP’s assurance of adequate security for the NPP primary.
The Ofoase Ayirebi MP noted that despite the violent incidents recorded during the Ablekuma North by-election, no individual has been jailed, a situation he argues undermines public trust in the police.
“Not a single person was jailed in the Ablekuma North [by-election chaos],” he stated.
Mr. Oppong Nkrumah further accused the Ghana Police Service of being compromised by the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), claiming that security arrangements tend to weaken when matters involve the NPP.
“Because the NDC is in power today, the police has weakened the lines of security when it comes to NPP matters,” he alleged.
Despite his concerns, the MP assured party members and delegates that the NPP will take responsibility for safeguarding its internal electoral process.
“The NPP will do the needful to ensure our election is secure,” he said, adding that the party would put in place measures to protect delegates and maintain order throughout the primary.
His comments come amid heightened political activity ahead of the NPP’s presidential contest, with party stakeholders calling for credible security arrangements to ensure a peaceful and transparent process.
