Athletic Club forward Iñaki Williams has announced his decision to retire from international football with Ghana, ending his four-year association with the Black Stars.
The 32-year-old confirmed his decision in a statement posted on X on Friday, September 11, explaining that he believes it is time to bring his chapter with the national team to a close.
“I feel the time has come to bring my journey with the Ghana national team to an end. I leave happy, proud and with the peace of mind of knowing that I gave everything every time I wore this shirt.”
Williams, who previously represented Spain at youth level, changed his international allegiance to Ghana in 2022 before making his senior debut for the Black Stars later that year.
He was part of Ghana’s squad at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and also featured at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. He subsequently remained involved with the national team and was included in the squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Looking back on his time with Ghana, Williams said his decision to represent the country had allowed him to strengthen his connection with his heritage while experiencing the significance of playing for the nation.
“Ghana has given me much more than football. It has allowed me to come back home, feel even closer to my roots and experience the enormous pride of representing my country and wearing this flag on my chest.”
The Athletic Club forward also expressed gratitude to Ghanaians for the encouragement and affection he received throughout his time in the Black Stars.
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has been part of this journey and for all the love you have always shown me.”
Although he is stepping away from international football, Williams stressed that his connection to Ghana will continue.
“Ghana will always be a part of me. I will continue supporting the @blackstarsofghana_ as one of you, wherever I am.”
His farewell brings the curtain down on his time in the Black Stars, with the forward now turning his full attention back to club football.
