The incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Agona West Constituency in the Central Region, Cynthia Morrison, lost her bid for reelection in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primary held last Saturday.
Christopher Arthur, a Deputy Director in charge of Technical Services at the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), emerged victorious with 240 votes, defeating Mrs. Morrison, who garnered 152 votes.
Competing against a field of other aspirants, including Ben Yamoah with 221 votes, businessman Yawson Otoo with 168 votes, and former Constituency Chairman Joseph Afankwah with 155 votes, Mr. Arthur’s victory came as a notable upset.
The primary in Agona West faced delays due to a legal challenge initiated by Mr. Afankwah, who was initially disqualified after vetting. Dissatisfied with his disqualification, he obtained an injunction on the primary, leading to a legal battle. However, an emergency National Executive Committee meeting cleared Mr. Afankwah to contest, resolving the impasse and allowing the primary to proceed.
Ahead of the primary, Mr. Arthur outlined his vision to prioritize the development of human capital in the constituency. Speaking to the press, he emphasized his commitment to initiatives aimed at uplifting and empowering the residents of Agona West.
With Mr. Arthur’s victory, attention now turns to the upcoming general elections, where he will face off against candidates from other political parties in a bid to represent the constituency in Parliament.
