A wave of anger has erupted following President John Dramani Mahama’s controversial appointment of Anthony Kwasi Sarpong as the Acting Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
On January 21, 2025, the announcement of Sarpong’s appointment, made in line with Article 195(1) of the Constitution and Section 13(1) of the Ghana Revenue Act, 2009 (Act 791), has ignited fierce protests from the youth.
The protests, led by activist Yakubu Wusama, saw demonstrators storm the GRA headquarters, calling on the President to reconsider his decision.
They demand that the President appoint someone who is capable and truly committed to the welfare of the people, especially someone from the National Democratic Congress who understands the needs of the country.
The appointment of Sarpong has sparked division across the political landscape, with critics claiming it reflects a lack of proper consultation and a disregard for merit.
Many have voiced concerns that Sarpong’s leadership may perpetuate the status quo, frustrating the progress and reforms that are urgently needed in the country’s tax administration.
