The Member of Parliament elect for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson is set to take his oath of office today, July 4, after emerging victorious in the by-elections held on June 27.
This comes after the Supreme Court’s decision on May 17, which invalidated his previous election and barred him from assuming the role of an MP. However, Mr. Quayson managed to reclaim his seat in the subsequent election, paving the way for his swearing-in ceremony.
Whilst James Gyakye Quayson is being sworn in, he is expected to be at the High Court to begin his daily trial on the forgery case against him; a situation which has been criticized by many.
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, expressed his concern over the situation, calling it unacceptable. The situation presents a unique challenge for Quayson, who must balance his parliamentary responsibilities with the demands of the court case.
“We just have elected a fresh MP and I have to go and swear him in to start his work. The same thing I complained about is still happening. They are chasing after him, and trying to prosecute him, even though, we know that, what they are talking about, there are even more of us who have the same thing, but they are not being prosecuted,” Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin stated.
Gyakye Quayson was successfully re-elected in a by-election for the Assin North constituency, garnering 57.56 percent of the total votes cast.
