JUSAG Strike Disrupts Court Operations as Supreme Court, Others Shut Down

Court activities have been disrupted in Accra following the commencement of an indefinite nationwide strike by the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) over delays in approving and implementing its members’ 2026 salary review.

Several court facilities, including the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, Accra High Court, Circuit Court and some District Courts, were inaccessible on Monday, November 2, as the industrial action took effect.

Security personnel reportedly prevented members of the public from entering the affected premises, with gates kept locked in compliance with instructions issued following the commencement of the strike.

Some court entrances also had red pieces of cloth displayed as a symbol of the association’s protest over the outstanding salary adjustments.

The strike follows months of disagreement over the implementation of a revised salary structure for Judicial Service employees.

JUSAG is demanding approval of the Judicial Council’s recommendations on the 2026 salary review and payment of the revised salaries in November, together with outstanding arrears covering January to October 2026.

The association had earlier directed its members to withdraw their services indefinitely from November 2 until the government meets its demands.

Meanwhile, Judicial Secretary Musah Ahmed has appealed to the association’s leadership and members to reconsider their position and return to work while negotiations continue.

Mr Ahmed said Judicial Service management had been engaging relevant government stakeholders in high-level discussions aimed at resolving the disagreement and securing a sustainable outcome.

He acknowledged the frustration among staff over the delay in implementing the salary review but maintained that management was committed to addressing their concerns.

The industrial action raises concerns about delays in court proceedings and other judicial services, particularly for litigants and legal practitioners who depend on the courts for the resolution of cases.

The duration of the strike will depend on the outcome of engagements between JUSAG, Judicial Service management and the relevant government authorities.
