Supreme Court nominee Justice Senyo Dzamefe has proposed the introduction of fixed timelines for the resolution of court cases in Ghana, calling it a necessary step to improve the delivery of justice.
He suggested that criminal cases be completed within three months and civil cases within six months, describing the move as key to reducing the current backlog in the justice system.
Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, 16 June, Justice Dzamefe outlined a broader vision for reform, calling for improvements in infrastructure, technology, and staffing.
“Anybody who wants to maximise productivity must first think of the human resource, because it’s a mistake a lot of people make,” he said.
He emphasized the importance of modernising court operations through the use of tools such as AI, voice recording, and real-time transcription.
“The time of long handwriting is long gone past,” he stated, adding that virtual testimonies could also improve access and speed. His proposals come amid widespread concerns about judicial delays, which have seen cases drag on for years in Ghana’s courts.
