The Director of Legal Education and Head of the Ghana School of Law (GSL), Justice Nana Barima Yaw Kodie Oppong, has announced that he will vacate his position effective Sunday, August 31, 2025.
In a notice to students on Tuesday, August 12, Justice Oppong expressed gratitude to God “for His love, guidance and protection over the past three years,” noting that although he had hoped to complete his term or at least see through the current academic year and the forthcoming Call to the Bar ceremony, “sadly that was not to be.”
He conveyed his “earnest prayer” for Part II students to be called to the Bar in October and encouraged Part I students to persevere in their studies.
Justice Oppong urged students to give “even greater respect, cooperation and support” to his successor, as well as to the management and staff of the institution.
Appointed in March 2022 by the General Legal Council (GLC) in accordance with the Legal Professions Act, 1960, he took over from long-serving director Kwasi Prempeh-Eck.
A solicitor of the Supreme Court of Ghana, Justice Oppong also serves as the Managing Partner of Ampofo, Oppong and Associates and is the Manwerehene of Akyem Abuakwa, bearing the stool name Omansomfo Barima Oppong Kodie.
Beyond his leadership at GSL, Justice Oppong has lectured at several universities, including Central University, and has extensive expertise in Energy and Natural Resource Law, as well as Banking and Finance law.
A member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in London, he is also a prolific writer, with works such as Contemporary Trends in the Law of Immovable Property in Ghana.
He has been a regular media resource person on legal matters and has held roles on prominent boards.
Justice Oppong holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Ghana, a Barrister-at-Law qualification from the Ghana School of Law, and a Master’s degree in Oil and Gas Law from the University of Ghana.
