Leading contender of the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer race, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has conceded defeat to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, before the official declaration of results.
Speaking to supporters at his campaign headquarters, Mr Agyapong acknowledged that the margin separating him from Dr Bawumia had become too wide to overturn. He urged his supporters to remain calm and steadfast, describing the outcome as part of a divine process. “Don’t worry, God will take care of you. He knew this date would come. We experienced this in 2023. Stay calm,” he told the gathering.
Earlier in the day, Dr Bawumia had addressed supporters at his campaign headquarters after receiving provisional collated results from his campaign manager, Opare-Ansah. The results, covering about 85 per cent of polling centres, indicated a commanding lead for the former Vice President.
Presenting the figures, Mr Opare-Ansah assured Dr Bawumia that the trend strongly favoured his candidacy. “Your Excellency, from what I have presented so far, it can only get better and you are cruising to a comfortable lead,” he said, sparking loud cheers, party songs and chants of “It is Bawumia, No Change” from supporters.
In his remarks, Dr Bawumia expressed gratitude to party delegates and campaign teams nationwide for their support. He also paid tribute to past NPP flagbearers, noting that their legacies had paved the way for the party’s continued growth. “It is an honour to stand on the shoulders of former flagbearers like Prof Adu Boahene, J.A. Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. I thank you all for making this happen,” he said.
Mr Agyapong’s concession is expected to ease post-election tensions within the party as the NPP prepares for the formal declaration of results and the next phase of its political campaign.
