Minister for Sports and Recreation Designate, Kofi Adams, has unveiled plans to modernize the Winneba Sports College and introduce financial incentives to retain players in the Ghana Premier League (GPL).
The Winneba Sports College, Ghana’s premier coaching and sports education institution, has long been in need of infrastructure upgrades and curriculum enhancements to meet modern coaching standards.
During his vetting, Adams stated the need to strengthen the technical aspects of the league by investing in coaching education and player retention strategies.
“We have discussed the challenges facing our Premier League. We will modernize the Winneba Sports College so that coaches can be trained there to provide technical support to the league,” Adams stated.
Beyond coaching, he also addressed player retention, acknowledging that many of Ghana’s top footballers leave the country in search of better opportunities abroad. “We will also retain players by providing them with a stipend, so they don’t feel compelled to play for other countries,” he added.
The move aims to reduce player exodus, ensuring that top talents stay in Ghana to boost the quality and competitiveness of the league. Adams’ vision aligns with efforts to revitalize domestic football, making the Ghana Premier League more attractive to fans, sponsors, and broadcasters.
