The Concerned Citizens of the Komenda Traditional Area have shifted their protest against the lease of the Komenda Sugar Factory to an Indian firm from Komenda to Accra.
Originally set for Tuesday, August 13, 2024, the demonstration will now occur on a date yet to be announced in the capital city.
The group is demanding the reversal of the lease agreement, which they argue was made without adequate procedural adherence and stakeholder consultation.
They want the factory to return to its original purpose of processing locally-grown sugarcane instead of importing raw sugar.
In a statement dated Sunday, August 11, 2024, the group explained their decision to relocate the protest, stating, “We aim to amplify our voices, escalate our demands, and ensure that our concerns receive the attention they deserve at the highest levels of government.”
The group is currently engaging with relevant stakeholders and authorities to finalize a new date for the demonstration, which they believe will help galvanize support and foster greater solidarity.
The Concerned Citizens have expressed deep concern over the lack of transparency and consultation in the investment agreement, highlighting commitments to new sugarcane varieties and farmland development.
They seek direct government assurance and transparency to ensure that local sugarcane farmers benefit from the agreement.
