The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) has temporarily suspended the acceptance of fresh bodies and Brought-in-Dead (BID) cases for six weeks due to an urgent refurbishment of its cold room facilities.
The hospital’s management, in a statement issued on February 3, 2025, explained that the measure was necessary to improve service delivery at Ghana’s largest tertiary health facility.
“As a result, we regret to announce that we will be unable to accept fresh bodies or Brought-in-Dead (BID) cases during this period,” the statement read.
However, the restriction does not apply to patients who pass away within the hospital’s premises, as existing arrangements will remain in place for them.
Bereaved Families Urged to Make Immediate Arrangements
In light of the suspension, Korle Bu has urged bereaved families whose deceased relatives have been in the mortuary for three to six weeks or longer to make immediate arrangements for burial or transfer to alternative facilities.
“The refurbishment is expected to be completed within six weeks,” the hospital assured.
The announcement has sparked concerns among families who rely on the facility, with many scrambling to find alternative mortuaries. Some have expressed frustration over the short notice, calling for better contingency plans.
Despite the inconveniences, hospital management remains firm on its decision, emphasizing that the upgrade is necessary for the long-term improvement of services.
“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your cooperation as we work to enhance our services,” the statement added.
