The Akim Oda Member of Parliament, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, has accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of using its numerical advantage in Parliament to “flex its muscles” over the New Patriotic Party (NPP) minority following the declaration of a vacant seat in the Kpandai Constituency.
The Parliamentary Service, on December 4, 2025, officially notified the Electoral Commission (EC) of the vacancy, paving the way for a re-run of the 2024 Parliamentary Election as ordered by the High Court in Tamale. The notification signaled the start of administrative processes required for the EC to begin preparations for the upcoming poll.
Reacting to the development during a media engagement, Mr. Acquah argued that the NDC’s posture since the vacancy was declared reinforces concerns that the minority may be subjected to undue pressure. He said the declaration has presented the NDC majority with an opportunity to exert control in ways that could disadvantage the NPP.
According to him, the NDC’s approach appears less about governance and more about demonstrating dominance, an attitude he believes is unhealthy for parliamentary cooperation. “The NDC is only using their strength over the minority; stretching their muscles to show power,” he stated.
He cautioned that such actions, if not checked, could escalate political tensions at a time when Parliament needs stability and unity, especially with major national issues awaiting legislative attention.
The Kpandai Constituency has become a focal point of national attention as both the NDC and NPP prepare to battle for the seat once again. The outcome of the re-run is expected to have implications for the balance of power in Parliament and the broader political climate ahead of the next general elections.
