The Member of Parliament for Ellembelle Constituency and Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, has called on students, teachers, and communities to take an active role in protecting the environment.
Speaking at the 2026 edition of the “Tree for Life” Reforestation Initiative and World Environment Day celebration at West Africa Senior High School, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, who also serves as Acting Minister for Science and Technology stressed that planting trees is only the beginning of the reforestation process. He noted that the long-term success of tree planting depends on proper care and maintenance.
He emphasized that educating young people about environmental responsibility is essential to building a generation that will preserve Ghana’s natural resources and support sustainable
development.
He urged schools, communities, and individuals to take responsibility for the trees they plant by watering them regularly, protecting them from bushfires and other forms of destruction, and monitoring their growth to ensure they mature into healthy trees.
The Minister said the selection of West Africa Senior High School as the national venue highlights the important role young people play in protecting the environment. He encouraged students to become environmental ambassadors by promoting proper waste disposal, conserving water and energy, protecting wildlife, and educating others about environmental conservation.
Hon. Buah also called on teachers and school authorities to strengthen environmental education in both classroom lessons and extracurricular activities. According to him, environmental awareness should be integrated into daily learning to help shape environmentally conscious citizens.
He concluded by urging all Ghanaians to support national efforts aimed at restoring the country’s forest cover and promoting a greener future.
