The legal team of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo is preparing to challenge the decision of the Committee of Inquiry that recommended her removal from office.
The Committee, established by President John Dramani Mahama to investigate petitions of misbehaviour against her, submitted its report on Monday, September 1, 2025, finding her guilty of misconduct and advising her dismissal.
Lead counsel and former Attorney-General, Nii Ayikoi Otoo, told ABC News GH on Saturday, September 6, 2026, that the former Chief Justice has been treated unfairly and deserves a chance to clear her name.
“This is an option we are looking for to get the records straight. When Dr. Danquah went to court to talk about Re and Akoto, and that there was the abuse of a fundamental human right, people did not take him seriously. But today, people are praising him for having fought that good fight. So, we will go to court at the right time,” Mr. Otoo said.
If filed, the case is expected to test the scope of presidential powers and the constitutional protections afforded to judicial office holders, potentially setting a significant precedent for future disputes involving the judiciary and executive authority.
