Mahama plans to revive Volta Star Textiles Limited (VSTL)

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to revive Volta Star Textiles Limited (VSTL) in Juapong, with the government working to secure a steady supply of cotton from neighbouring Benin to support the company’s return to production.

The President made the disclosure on Thursday, July 16, 2026, during his Resetting Ghana Agenda Tour in Juapong, where he assured chiefs and residents that concrete measures were being taken to restore the textile company to full operations.

According to President Mahama, government is in discussions with the Beninese authorities to establish a framework that will guarantee the availability of raw materials for the factory when production resumes.

“Arrangements are being made to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Benin to supply us with cotton to feed the factory in Ghana,” he said.

He explained that securing a reliable cotton supply chain was essential to ensuring the long-term sustainability of the company and preventing disruptions once operations restart.

President Mahama described VSTL as an important part of Juapong’s economic history, noting that the factory previously provided employment opportunities for thousands of people and contributed significantly to the local economy.

He said the government’s revival strategy will involve strategic partnerships, investment mobilisation and the modernisation of the facility to meet current industry standards.

The President further revealed that a strategic investor has already been selected to support the revitalisation of the company after a competitive bidding process.

“Government has selected a strategic investor to partner in the revitalisation of Volta Star Textiles Limited,” he stated.

He added that the transaction adviser would soon facilitate engagements between the investor and the factory’s management to begin the process of designing, rehabilitating and upgrading the facility.

President Mahama expressed optimism that restoring VSTL would create sustainable employment opportunities for residents of Juapong and surrounding communities while strengthening Ghana’s textile and manufacturing sector.

He noted that the project aligns with government’s broader industrialisation agenda aimed at promoting job creation, value addition and economic growth.

The President urged residents to remain hopeful, stressing that the revival of Volta Star Textiles forms part of efforts to reset the economy and reposition Juapong as a key industrial centre.
