A formal petition has been submitted to President John Dramani Mahama, urging him to remove the Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson, Jean Mensa, and three of her colleagues from office.
The petitioner, Daniel Ofosu Appiah from the Volta Region, accuses the EC leadership of “gross incompetence” and constitutional breaches that undermine public confidence in Ghana’s electoral process.
The petition, filed on January 27, 2025, highlights the disenfranchisement of voters in the Santrokofi, Akpafu, Likpe, and Lolobi areas during the 2020 parliamentary elections as a major violation.
“For over four years, the people of SALL were deprived of their constitutional right to parliamentary representation,” the document states, alleging this exclusion was a deliberate attempt to influence parliamentary balance in favor of the ruling party. It further accuses the EC of mismanaging the 2020 elections, citing errors in presidential results and alleged partisan bias by EC members, including social media posts by Dr. Bossman Asare and Dr. Peter Appiahene.
The petitioner has called on President Mahama to act under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution to restore public trust in the electoral system, stressing that impartiality and integrity are non-negotiable for the EC.
The Presidency is yet to comment on the matter, but this marks the latest controversy in Jean Mensa’s tenure, following similar petitions in 2020 and 2022 that were dismissed by former President Akufo-Addo.
