President John Dramani Mahama has reassigned Obuobia Darko-Opoku from her role as Acting Deputy Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) to lead the Secretariat of the newly established Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as MahamaCares.
The move places Ms. Darko-Opoku at the helm of a critical initiative aimed at enhancing access to healthcare financing under the current administration.
Ms. Darko-Opoku, who took up her position at GACL in March 2025, is now expected to oversee the implementation and coordination of the Medical Trust Fund’s mandate.
The Fund was created to provide targeted support for health-related interventions, especially for vulnerable populations.
Her new role will involve managing operations at the MahamaCares Secretariat and ensuring efficient disbursement of resources under the Fund.
The reassignment was formalized in a letter from the Office of the President, citing Article 195(1) of the 1992 Constitution and Section 15(1) of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund Act, 2025 (Act 1144).
Her appointment is subject to the advice of the Fund’s Governing Board in consultation with the Public Services Commission.
