President John Dramani Mahama has approved changes to the structure of the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS), resulting in six new appointments and reassignments with immediate effect.
The changes, announced on Tuesday, August 11, form part of efforts to reorganise the operations of the Secretariat.
A statement issued by the President’s Spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said the appointments affect key areas including operations, intelligence, logistics, human security and special investigations.
Under the new arrangement, Major General (Rtd) William Ayamdo, a former Chief of Army Staff, has been appointed Deputy National Security Coordinator in charge of Operations.
Former National Security Coordinator Yaw Donkor has also been appointed Director of Intelligence and Research at the Office of the National Security Advisor.
Mr Adamu Saaka will serve as Director of Logistics and Transport, while Ms Faustina Effah-Boadi has been appointed Officer in Charge of the Human Security Department.
DCOP (Rtd) Peter Ndekugri has been named Officer in Charge of the Special Investigations Unit.
ACP Alhassan Osman, meanwhile, has been reassigned to the Ghana Police Service for further deployment.
Major General Ayamdo is a former Chief of Army Staff, a position he held from February 2017 until his retirement in February 2020. He was succeeded by Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah.
Mr Yaw Donkor also brings previous experience at the highest level of Ghana’s national security architecture, having served as National Security Coordinator during President Mahama’s first administration between 2014 and 2017.
The latest changes come about four months after President Mahama assented to the Security and Intelligence Agencies Act, 2026 (Act 1168), which introduced changes to Ghana’s security governance framework and abolished the Office of the Minister of National Security.
The current security architecture is headed by Prosper Bani as National Security Advisor, while COP Abdul-Osman Razak serves as National Security Coordinator.
