Accra – The Minority in Parliament has raised serious concerns over what it calls misrepresentations and inconsistencies in the recent report by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, regarding Ghanaian refugees in Vonkoro, Côte d’Ivoire.
According to the Foreign Minister, during his visit on 14th September 2025, about 8,000 of the 13,000 displaced Ghanaians had returned home, with the remaining refugees urged to follow.
However, the Minority insists this account contradicts the findings of the Multisectoral Rapid Assessment of the Humanitarian Impact of the conflict in Gbeyinri, conducted by the government of Ghana in collaboration with international bodies such as UNHCR, IOM, WFP, WHO, FAO, and World Vision.
The assessment revealed that approximately 48,000 people have been displaced by the conflict, with around 13,000 fleeing to Côte d’Ivoire and others to Burkina Faso. Of this number, Vonkoro alone is hosting about 5,000 refugees, with no evidence to support claims that the majority have returned home.
The Minority has therefore urged the government to present accurate reports and work towards safeguarding the rights and welfare of the displaced citizens.
