The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has announced that more than 70 percent of households enrolled on the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme have experienced significant improvements in their living conditions, paving the way for many to exit the social intervention initiative.

The development, according to the sector minister, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, reflects the programme’s growing impact in helping vulnerable households improve their incomes and become more self-reliant.

Speaking during a working visit to the Northern Region, Dr. Lartey disclosed that approximately 350,000 households from the current beneficiary pool are expected to leave the programme after recording substantial gains in their livelihoods.

She explained that the transition will allow government to enrol more qualifying households, in line with its target of expanding LEAP coverage to 400,000 households nationwide.

The minister noted that the replacement of households exiting the programme will ensure that support reaches other vulnerable families who meet the eligibility requirements.

“Those that are left on the programme who are yet to see significant improvement in their livelihoods are just a few and so we are working to make sure by the close of the year, we have the 400,000 households intact and they are benefiting from the programme,” she said.

The LEAP programme remains one of Ghana’s flagship social protection initiatives, providing cash grants and complementary support to extremely poor and vulnerable households, including older persons without support, persons with severe disabilities, and orphaned and vulnerable children.
