The National Peace Council (NPC) has called on political parties to withdraw their supporters from collation centres across the country to avoid delays and heightened tensions in the electoral process.
In a press release issued on December 7, 2024, the NPC, along with the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) and other partners in the Election Situation Room, expressed concern over the directives from the two major political parties for their supporters to converge at the centres.
The NPC emphasized that this action could obstruct electoral officers, delay the announcement of results, and increase tension at collation centres.
They urged political parties to exercise restraint and rely on their accredited agents to oversee the collation process instead of crowding the centres with their supporters.
The Council further appealed to political parties to uphold the electoral rules and allow Electoral Commission officials to perform their duties professionally and transparently.
“It is crucial for all stakeholders to work together to ensure a free, fair, and credible election,” the NPC stated, reinforcing the importance of maintaining peace throughout the electoral process.
