In a surprising turn of events, Salt 95.9 FM, a prominent radio station based in Agogo, has been forcibly shut down by the National Communications Authority (NCA) in conjunction with security officers.
According to accounts by eyewitnesses, it appears the closure stems from the station’s failure to renew its authorization.
Reports gathered by ABC News reveal that on Tuesday afternoon, officials from the NCA, accompanied by security personnel, forcibly entered the station’s premises and proceeded to disconnect the station’s equipment, effectively silencing its broadcasts. Additionally, the transmitter was confiscated and transferred to the NCA’s office in Kumasi.
Prior to this development, the owner of Salt 95.9 FM, identified as Ohene Kwame Frimpong, had reportedly organized a health walk scheduled for Sunday, February 4, 2024, in Agogo. However, this event was also thwarted by security agencies. The explanation provided was that Frimpong had failed to notify the police about the planned public gathering and procession through the streets.
The closure of Salt 95.9 FM has sparked widespread speculation and discussions within the Agogo community.
The abrupt shutdown of Salt 95.9 FM has left many residents questioning the motives behind the NCA’s actions and has raised concerns about freedom of expression and media rights across the country.
