The National Communication Authority (NCA) says owners of unregistered SIM cards have until May 2023 to register in order to avoid their cards being completely deactivated.
The Director General of NCA, Joseph Anokye, stated during a press conference on Wednesday that about 11 million non-compliant SIM cards will be deactivated.
“Per the statistics, there are about 11 million active unregistered sims. If you are part of this 11 million and you are not exempted – if you are not a foreign diplomat, you are not a refugee – you will be delinked if you do not register,” he said.
This action is being taken despite providing several extensions and grace periods for SIM card holders to re-register their sims.
According to Mr. Anokye, more than six million SIM cards have been deactivated from their database because their owners failed to verify their cards biometrically.
However, many Ghanaians have expressed dissatisfaction with the regulator’s strict enforcement of the Ghana Card registration system, particularly since millions of people do not have the Ghana Card.
In response, Mr. Anokye stated that the only way to prevent deactivation is for SIM card holders to prove that they genuinely do not possess the Ghana Card.
