The Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has assured the West African Elders Forum (WAEF) of the NDC’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful election on December 7.
During a meeting with the Forum, led by former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, Mahama emphasized the importance of maintaining peace in the lead-up to the election.
The meeting came shortly after Mahama returned from a campaign tour of the Savannah region, signaling the high priority placed on electoral integrity.
Mahama stressed the need for collaboration between the Electoral Commission (EC) and key stakeholders to ensure a fair electoral process.
“We all want a peaceful election, but a peaceful election is predicated on the groundwork and the preparation that is done before the election,” Mahama stated.
He further emphasized that the EC, as a neutral body, must play its role effectively to guarantee a successful election.
His comments come amid heightened focus on preventing election-related conflict in the subregion, a key initiative of the WAEF.
Reflecting on his experience with the Forum, Mahama praised their efforts to prevent election-related conflicts, noting their recent work in Nigeria.
“Since 2020, the Forum has been working to help prevent conflict arising mainly from elections in the subregion.
This initiative is commendable and very useful,” Mahama said.
With just 60 days until the election, the former president expressed confidence that with cooperation between stakeholders, Ghana would achieve another peaceful electoral process.
