The National Democratic Congress parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso East, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, has refuted claims of engaging in vote buying during the Ayawaso East parliamentary primary held on February 7, 2026.
In an official statement, Baba Jamal addressed a communiqué issued by the Presidential Spokesperson and Minister for Government Communication, which cited allegations of inducement during the primary as the reason for his recall.

The statement also referenced remarks from the NDC General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, who condemned the accusations and announced that the party would investigate the claims of vote buying.
“I wish to state categorically that I have not engaged in any vote buying or electoral malpractice. I remain committed to cooperating fully with the party’s investigation into these allegations at any time,” Baba Jamal said.
He expressed appreciation to President Mahama for the opportunity to serve Ghana in Nigeria and thanked the delegates in Ayawaso East for selecting him to lead the party in the upcoming parliamentary by-election scheduled for March 3, 2026.
The controversy comes amid reports that Baba Jamal allegedly distributed items such as 32-inch televisions and boiled eggs to delegates during the primary. According to some party members and observers, these actions were seen as attempts to influence the outcome of the election.
In response, the NDC has established a three-member committee to probe the alleged vote buying. The panel, chaired by Kofi Totobi Quakyi and comprising Mahama Ayariga and lawyer Emefa Fugah, is expected to present its findings by Tuesday, February 10, 2026.
Meanwhile, the NDC Majority Caucus in Parliament has urged the immediate annulment of the Ayawaso East primary and called for the disqualification of any candidate found guilty of engaging in inducement practices.
