The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has firmly rejected suggestions that it is considering a constitutional amendment to allow President John Dramani Mahama to run for a third presidential term.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, December 11, 2025, the party’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, described recent public discussions, sparked by comments attributed to the Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, as misleading and without basis.

According to the statement, the NDC has “no intention, now or in the future,” of directing its parliamentary majority to initiate, support, or consider any amendment to the 1992 Constitution that would alter Ghana’s two-term presidential limit.
Asiedu Nketiah stressed that the party’s position on the matter is historic, consistent, and unwavering.
He noted that it was the NDC that championed the 1992 Constitution and ensured the presidential term was limited to two terms, a decision he said was intended to safeguard national stability, prevent abuse of executive power, and strengthen democratic governance.
The statement warned that any attempt to change this constitutional pillar would be “dangerous,” arguing that a third-term amendment would spark needless tension, heighten instability, and erode the peace the country has enjoyed under the Fourth Republic.
The party made it clear that it would “not sponsor, support, entertain, or tolerate” any proposal to amend presidential term limits for any individual, including President Mahama.
The statement further emphasized that Mahama himself has consistently shown respect for the Constitution and Ghana’s democratic traditions, urging the public to disregard rumours suggesting he may seek a third term in office.
Asiedu Nketiah reiterated that the NDC remains committed to protecting the Constitution it authored, adding that the party’s priority continues to be governance reforms, economic recovery, national unity, and the strengthening of democratic institutions.
The statement signed by Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, National Chairman of the NDC, assured Ghanaians that the NDC will continue to uphold the principles of peace, stability, and democratic progress.
