The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is staging a nationwide protest today, September 17, in opposition to the Electoral Commission (EC).
This demonstration, dubbed “Enough is Enough,” is being held across all 16 regional capitals.
The NDC is expressing its frustration with the EC’s refusal to allow a forensic audit of the voters’ register ahead of the December elections.
The party alleges several irregularities in the register, including the illegal mass transfer of votes in various regions.
Despite these accusations, the EC has defended its actions, claiming that all necessary corrections were made during the exhibition of the provisional register, as stipulated by law.
The NDC’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, announced the protest earlier this month, expressing concerns over the EC’s handling of the electoral process.
He cited the lack of updates regarding an investigation into the theft of Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs), raising questions about the transparency of the upcoming election.
“Those of you who have been asking us what we would do if they did not comply, this is your answer: on the 17th of this month, the NDC is embarking on a massive nationwide demonstration,” Nketiah stated.
In response, the Ghana Police Service has outlined guidelines to ensure a peaceful and orderly protest.
Authorities have requested demonstrators to follow designated routes and timelines, warning against any acts of violence or destruction of property.
Police officers will be deployed along the protest routes to maintain peace, and those found guilty of disrupting order could face consequences, including fines for property damage.
