The Vice Presidential Candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, known as ‘Napo,’ has cautioned that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) intends to cancel the nursing trainee allowance should they assume power.

Speaking at the Pantang Nursing and Midwifery Training College, he warned that the NDC’s “Resetting Ghana” manifesto would dismantle the NPP’s initiatives that are supporting Ghanaian nursing students.

“I fear for our nursing trainees in the country because if the NDC mistakenly captured political power, they would instantly scrap the nursing trainee allowance, which provides financial support for you in school,” he lamented.

Dr. Prempeh criticized the NDC’s alleged inconsistency on the allowance, noting it signals a likely cancellation if they return to government.

Emphasizing the benefits under the NPP, he shared that over 150,000 nurses have been employed since 2017, with recent efforts to further expand employment despite NDC’s opposition.

“The NPP has since 2017 employed 150,000 nurses,” he said, recounting the NPP’s ongoing efforts to address healthcare needs, such as additional hospital facilities and 13,000 new beds to improve patient comfort across the country.

Pointing to achievements under the Nana Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration, Dr. Prempeh reassured the nursing trainees that the NPP remains committed to advancing the health sector with projects like the Agenda 111 hospitals.

With several of these facilities nearing completion, he reminded the public of the enduring improvements brought by the NPP since the establishment of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) by ex-President Kufuor.

As the December 7 election approaches, he urged the electorate to secure NPP’s continued efforts to enhance healthcare infrastructure and welfare for healthcare workers.
