A prominent private legal practitioner and current Akwatia Constituency Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Bernard Bediako Baidoo, has picked nomination forms to contest the party’s parliamentary primaries ahead of the upcoming by-election in the constituency.
Mr. Baidoo, based in Koforidua, picked his forms on Monday, July 28, at the Eastern Regional NDC office.
He was accompanied by a group of traditional leaders and elders from Akwatia who pledged their support, describing him as the most suitable candidate to help the party reclaim the seat from the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The Akwatia seat became vacant following the death of MP Ernest Yaw Kumi on July 7, 2025.
Three aspirants have so far picked forms to contest the NDC primaries: Bernard Bediako Baidoo, Erasmus Korney Ali, a businessman, and Henry Boakye Yiadom, a former MP and the NDC’s 2024 candidate.
Mr. Baidoo, who previously served as the legal counsel for Mr. Yiadom in the court challenge against Kumi’s 2024 victory, addressed questions about his decision to enter the race.
“Yes, I was the NDC’s lawyer in the case between Henry Boakye Yiadom (OKOYO) and Ernest Yaw Kumi… but the phase has ended,” he said, adding that many senior NDC members had encouraged him to contest.
The party will vet aspirants on Thursday, July 31, and hold the primaries on Monday, August 4.
