The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has set up an election machinery to put spokes in the wheels of some sitting NPP Members of Parliament so they lose their attempt to go back to Parliament.
To that end, the opposition party has rolled out strategies to influence voting in the targeted constitutes in the upcoming Parliamentary primaries.
ABC has picked intelligence that the NDC has targeted about 25 seats in order to weaken the front of the NPP in 2025.
“I can tell you that the NPP is in trouble. This Saturday, a lot of the NPP MPs would lose their seats not because of bad performance, but because the NDC has targeted them”, a source close to the NDC told ABC News.
ABC checks with some incumbent NPP MPs revealed a certain level of apprehension going into the election on Saturday.
“Look, all our top guns are going home, most of us now are seeking third and second terms and we’re going to fill the gap but it seems the party is oblivious of that. Not a single form of support has come our way and it’s a source of worry. The party should have been deliberate about helping some of our members but…”, a worried NPP MP told this paper.
It would be recalled that Eighteen (18) Members of the Majority Caucus have signalled that they will not be seeking re-election in the next parliamentary elections in 2024.
This voluntary exit has sparked significant speculations and discussions about the future trajectory of the NPP in the coming years.
Among the noteworthy MPs opting not to seek re-election are the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu (Suame), First Deputy Speaker, Joe Osei Owusu (Bekwai), Atta Akyea (Abuakwa South), Joe Ghartey (Essikado Ketan), and Ken Agyapong (Assin Central). Their decision undoubtedly leaves a void in the party’s leadership and parliamentary representation.
Other MPs who have decided to step down include Dan Botwe (Okere), Kwasi Amoako-Atta (Atiwa West), Dr. Kwaku Afriyie (Sefwi Wiaso), and Emmanuel Marfo (Oforikrom).
Additionally, Benito Owusu-Bio (Atwima Nwabiagya), Carlos Ahenkora (Tema West), Nana Kwasi Adjei Boateng (New Juabeng North), William Owuraku Aidoo (Afigya Kwabre South), Johnson Adu (Ahafo Ano South West), Francis Manu-Adabor (Ahafo Ano South-East), Suleman Sanid (Ahafo Ano North), Kojo Kum (Ahanta West), and Francisca Oteng (Kwabre East) are among those opting not to seek re-election.
