The National Identification Authority (NIA) has dismissed ten (10) of its employees, following the outcome of a comprehensive investigation into allegations of misconduct, extortion, and breaches of NIA’s operational procedures.
The officers were found to have engaged in these activities during the execution of their duties related to the registration of citizens for the Ghana Card.
The decision to terminate their employment came after a thorough probe conducted by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, based at the NIA’s headquarters in Accra.
This comprehensive investigative process was initiated by suspending the implicated personnel. Subsequently, a Disciplinary Committee of Inquiry was convened, ensuring an equitable forum for each officer to present their case. Eventually, the recommendations put forth by this committee received the nod of approval from NIA management.
The discharged officers were found culpable of soliciting and receiving unapproved fees from applicants who were in pursuit of the Ghana Card. In addition, they were found to have tampered with the registration system to advance their personal gains.
These acts of wrongdoing played out across several NIA offices, spanning the expanse from the Head Office in Accra to the Subin Sub-Metro District Office in Kumasi, the Western Regional Office in Takoradi, the Registrar General’s Department Office in Accra Central, as well as the Adentan Municipal Office and the La-Nkwantanang Municipal Office. Such conduct starkly contradicts the fundamental principles of transparency and integrity that the NIA staunchly upholds, casting a shadow on its reputation and objectives.
Reacting to these unfolding events, Professor Kenneth Agyemang Attafuah, the NIA’s Executive Secretary, emphatically reiterated the institution’s resolute dedication to upholding the utmost benchmarks of professionalism, accountability, and ethical conduct.
The release said the NIA remains steadfast in fulfilling its mandate by providing dependable, transparent, and credible identification services to the public, all while adhering to the highest benchmarks of professionalism and ethical conduct.
