Nine people have been confirmed dead following a tragic boat accident on Volta Lake in the East Gonja District.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at about 5:30 pm along the Yeji–Congo route between Sikakope and Mataiko. The boat, which was carrying 14 passengers, reportedly capsized due to rough weather conditions on the lake.
Five male passengers survived the accident and were rescued, while the remaining passengers, including women and children, were confirmed dead.
Authorities say emergency response teams were quickly deployed to the scene to assist in rescue operations and support affected families.
Speaking to Joy News, Savannah Regional Minister Salisu Be-Awuribe described the incident as unfortunate and confirmed that measures were being taken to support victims’ families.
“We’ve directed the district NADMO officers to quickly move to the site and see what other packages are available to give to them. We are also mobilising resources to assist the families affected, but it is unfortunate that we lost nine patriots’ lives,” he said.
Authorities are expected to continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident, even as rescue and relief efforts continue in the affected communities.
