The Nkwanta North District in the Oti Region has recorded its first confirmed case of mpox, a viral infection of global concern. District Health Director, Eric Kojo Agboka, disclosed at a press briefing with Adom News that the case involved an individual who had traveled from the Accra Konkomba market and showed symptoms consistent with the virus.
Following thorough testing, health officials confirmed the diagnosis, citing fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes as common signs associated with the disease.
Mr. Agboka emphasized the importance of public awareness regarding mpox, encouraging individuals to seek immediate medical help if they notice unusual symptoms.
He explained that the virus, formerly known as monkeypox, is zoonotic in nature and can spread from animals to humans as well as between people.
The District Health Directorate has begun sensitization efforts to ensure the public is well informed and prepared.
District Chief Executive, Isaiah Dordoe, underscored the need for vigilance and community cooperation in managing the outbreak. “We are working closely with the health department to ensure that all necessary measures are in place to prevent further spread of the virus,” he stated.
Health officials have initiated contact tracing and launched education campaigns highlighting the symptoms of mpox and the importance of hygiene practices. Authorities have assured residents of continued monitoring and timely updates as part of efforts to contain the situation.
