Anti-corruption advocate Vitus Azeem has criticized the lack of commitment to recovering funds allegedly mismanaged in the National Cathedral project.
Speaking on ABC News GH, Azeem called for a suspension of the project and a thorough investigation into the secretariat and the board of trustees to determine financial losses and culpability.
“We need to recover our losses. First, we should suspend the project and investigate the entire secretariat, including members of the board of trustees, to find out how much money we’ve lost, who is responsible, and try to recover them,” he stated.
Azeem also urged religious leaders to refrain from associating themselves with such controversial projects, emphasizing that their involvement could tarnish their moral authority.
“They shouldn’t have come into these things in the first place because they are supposed to be held in high esteem and behave accordingly,” he added. His comments follow a report by CHRAJ recommending a forensic audit of the project’s expenditure and prosecution of those involved.
Meanwhile, governance expert Professor Agyeman Duah has proposed repurposing the stalled National Cathedral project into an internationally recognized conference facility.
Speaking on ABC In The Morning, Duah argued that such a move would address Ghana’s need for larger event venues while preventing the cathedral from becoming a white elephant.
“This decision will complement the Accra International Conference Centre and enable the hosting of more prominent national and international events,” he explained, referencing similar facilities in other African countries.
His call aligns with growing public scrutiny over the cathedral’s viability and alleged financial mismanagement.
