Northern Region records 373 fires outbreaks in 2024, GH₵68M in property losses

The Northern Region has witnessed a staggering 373 fire outbreaks in 2024, marking an increase from 312 cases in 2023, according to a report by the Ghana Fire Service.

The fires caused property damages estimated at GH₵68,217,224. Domestic fires topped the list with 189 cases, followed by electrical fires (49) and commercial fires (44).

The report also highlighted a disturbing rise in fire incidents involving uncompleted structures, which accounted for 19 outbreaks last year.

In just the first 20 days of 2025, 40 fire cases have already been recorded, including two major incidents that destroyed the warehouse of GSL African Ltd. and the Tamale timber market.

The report identified causes such as electrical faults, gas leaks, and unattended cooking and candles.

The Fire Service urged residents to adopt safer practices to prevent further incidents, warning that behaviors like bush burning and substandard wiring could worsen the crisis.
