The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has secured agreements with Senegal and Gambia to facilitate the importation of petroleum products from Ghana, further extending its export network that already includes Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, and Togo.
This development was announced during the Ghana International Petroleum Conference (GhiPCon), where NPA CEO Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid highlighted Ghana’s re-export and transit of 385,154,100 litres of petroleum products in 2023 as a testament to the NPA’s success in curbing illicit fuel activities.
The petroleum industry in Ghana, supported by over 3,000 registered service providers, delivers more than four million metric tonnes of products annually, contributing significantly to the nation’s GDP.
Dr. Abdul-Hamid emphasized the sector’s economic impact, valuing it at over GH¢71 billion, approximately 84% of the country’s 2023 GDP.
He also noted the evolution of pricing reforms, enhanced by a transparent automatic price adjustment formula, and the NPA’s commitment to using technology for maintaining fuel quality and efficiency.
The Minister of Energy, on behalf of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, praised the NPA’s strategic initiatives, urging continued investment in infrastructure and technology to ensure Ghana’s energy security amidst global challenges.
