The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has clarified that its national chairman is the official leader of the party at all material times, irrespective of who holds the presidency.
Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, a member of the NPP Constitutional Review Committee, explained that one of the key motions passed during the July 19 National Delegates Conference was to clearly define party leadership and avoid confusion between party structures and government leadership.
Speaking to ABC Midday News, Oppong Nkrumah noted, “There have been times where there have been confusions that the leader of the party is the flagbearer or the president. What we sought to do as part of efforts to improve corporate governance in the party was to be very clear that the leader of the party is the chairman of the party at all material times.”
He emphasized that while the party produces candidates for government roles, it must maintain independence and continuity through its own leadership.
This decision is one of 54 motions approved at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference, which brought together nearly 7,000 delegates nationwide to chart the party’s course toward the 2028 elections.
The clarification on party leadership is seen as a move to strengthen internal coherence and establish clear lines of authority between elected officials and the party’s governing structures.
