The National Council of Elders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has urged its members and supporters to halt all campaign activities for internal party positions following the party’s defeat in the December 7, 2024, elections.
In a statement signed by Chairman Hackman Owusu-Agyemang, the elders expressed “deep concern” over ongoing campaigns, describing them as counterproductive to efforts to rebuild the party after losing both the presidency and parliamentary majority.
The council called for unity and a period of reflection, emphasizing the need to assess the party’s electoral performance.
To this end, the NPP has established an Election Review Committee chaired by Professor Mike Oquaye, tasked with identifying the causes of the defeat and proposing reforms within three months.
“It is critical for us to rebuild and energize our party,” the elders urged, adding that internal competition should be deferred for now.
Despite the setback, the council remained optimistic about the NPP’s recovery, stating, “We have done it before, and with the good Lord on our side and determination, we can do it again.”
