The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has taken legal action to stop the Electoral Commission (EC) from conducting a rerun of parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency.
The party’s National Youth Organiser, Salam Mustapha, disclosed that an interlocutory injunction has been filed to halt the EC’s decision.
According to Mr. Mustapha, the Electoral Commission’s directive to rerun the election is “unjust” and lacks merit. “We have filed an interlocutory injunction to restrain the Electoral Commission from proceeding with the rerun,” he said, emphasising the party’s dissatisfaction with the basis for the rerun. The EC had cited disputes over the authenticity of results from the December 7, 2024, general elections as the reason for its move.
The NPP maintains that the declared results in Ablekuma North were credible and that the EC’s decision undermines electoral fairness. The party insists the appropriate channels were followed in collating and declaring the initial results, and sees the rerun directive as an unnecessary disruption to the democratic process.
