The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has declared a general amnesty for all members who have been suspended or are currently facing disciplinary proceedings, in what leadership describes as a step toward unity and reconciliation.
This was contained in a statement dated August 16, 2025, and signed by the Acting National Chairman, Mr. Danquah Smith Buttey.
“I write to inform you that the National Council at its Emergency Meeting held on Friday, July 25, 2025, resolved in the interest of unity and reconciliation to grant a General Amnesty to all Party members who have been suspended or whose disciplinary cases are currently pending before the appropriate adjudicatory bodies,” Mr. Buttey announced.
He explained that the directive effectively lifts all such suspensions and waives any ongoing proceedings against affected members.
Mr. Buttey further urged members who have forfeited their membership to submit formal applications to the national secretariat for reinstatement.
He, however, clarified that reinstated members will remain ineligible to contest in any internal party election until after a mandatory two-year waiting period.
“This measure reflects the Party’s unwavering commitment to fostering internal cohesion, strengthening solidarity, and preparing collectively for the political tasks ahead,” he stated.
The Acting Chairman also cautioned party leaders across all structures against arbitrary suspensions.
“In view of this resolution, Party leadership at all levels is hereby strictly advised to refrain from any arbitrary suspension of members. All disciplinary matters must be handled solely in accordance with the procedures, principles, and due process provisions expressly enshrined in the Party’s constitution,” he said.
The amnesty resolution is expected to heal divisions within the party, which has in recent years faced internal cracks over disciplinary actions, suspensions, and expulsion of some members.
