The New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ghana’s two major political parties, are set to hold their final rallies today ahead of the December 7 general elections.
The NPP will convene at the UG Sports Directorate Park opposite the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, while the NDC will gather at Zurak Park in Madina.
The close proximity of the venues along the Accra-Madina stretch has prompted the Ghana Police Service to implement heightened security measures to prevent potential clashes between supporters.
In a statement, the police acknowledged concerns over the risk posed by the venues being so near each other.
“Although the Police would have preferred the two political parties to have considered relocating their rally venues… both parties indicated that such a change would be politically disadvantageous to them,” the statement read.
To address the situation, the police have introduced designated routes for party supporters. For instance, NPP supporters from Adenta are advised to use the Ritz Junction-American House-Okponglo route to access the UG Sports Directorate Park, while those from Dome are directed via the Haatso-GIMPA route.
Similarly, the North Legon and Memuna roads will be blocked to facilitate access for NDC supporters.
Reiterating their commitment to maintaining law and order, the police assured the public of their readiness.
“Once again, we would like to assure the public that the Police will take all necessary measures to maintain security, law and order throughout the events,” the statement emphasized.
