The Member of Parliament for Akim Oda Constituency, Alexander Akwasi Acquah has cautioned members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against introducing religion and tribal sentiments into the party’s presidential primaries.
Reacting to comments made by Bryan Acheampong in the flagbearer contest, the MP described such approaches as dangerous and counterproductive, stressing that Ghanaians are more concerned about leadership built on ideas and development rather than divisions.
Speaking on ABC News, he noted that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s response to the attacks was focused on accurate data, which showed that certain parts of the country remain natural strongholds for the NPP.
According to him, this reality highlights the need for the party to consolidate support in areas where it has historically struggled rather than using personal or identity-based attacks.
The Akim Oda MP further warned that if Dr. Bawumia’s religious or tribal background becomes the only strategy used against him, the NPP risks alienating voters.
“Bawumia’s response has given accurate data that that part of the country is not for the NPP. Anyone going on the ticket of the NPP fails at that part of the country. So if you do not find other means against Bawumia, I do not think you will succeed,” he cautioned.
