A dramatic scene unfolded in Parliament as New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MPs) staged a walkout after their seats were occupied by National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs.
Led by Effutu MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the NPP MPs retreated to their offices, signaling their commitment to peace as they awaited directives from Speaker Alban Bagbin.
The tense atmosphere followed ongoing friction surrounding the Speaker’s recent declaration of four vacant seats, which was stayed by the Supreme Court.
Afenyo-Markin, speaking on behalf of the NPP MPs, emphasized their decision to avoid confrontation, highlighting their desire to maintain Ghana’s peaceful reputation.
“We didn’t cause commotion here. We left quietly and told Mr. Speaker that the right place to express those grievances would be in court,” he stated, adding that the party was focused on upholding the rule of law.
His message was clear: the NPP remains committed to peace, urging the Speaker to weigh in decisively to safeguard Ghana’s democratic order.
The NPP MPs exited the chamber, chanting their party anthem, jubilant NDC MPs mocked them, shouting, “Away, away, away.”
Reports indicates that, the Speaker has arrived.
