The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) is intensifying its call for the urgent dualization of the Accra-Kumasi Highway following the death of 16 students in a recent crash.
Speaking to ABC News GH, Pearl Adusu Sateckla, the Authority’s Public Relations Officer, asserted that such accidents could be avoided with proper road infrastructure.
“Dualization of that particular stretch — if it would have happened, I don’t think that collision would have happened,” she stated.
Her remarks came as the country mourned the young lives lost, buried this week in a mass burial ceremony. Pearl urged government not to overlook road safety in its national development agenda.
“As they are doing the Big Push, they should look at road safety too,” she added, referring to Ghana’s flagship infrastructure initiative.
This call adds to mounting pressure from the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), whose General Secretary, Emmanuel Ohene-Yeboah, has described the highway as a death trap.
He has urged government to declare a national emergency on the stretch. With road accidents spiking and public frustration growing, transport and safety advocates say the time for action is now.
